Event Overview:

Ethical challenges facing tax professionals continue to evolve as organizations navigate increasingly complex tax positions, regulatory scrutiny, technology advancements, and the growing use of artificial intelligence. This timely program will explore the ethical standards and professional responsibilities that guide in-house tax professionals when dealing with tax planning, reliance on third-party advice, IRS examinations, privilege considerations, and emerging AI technologies.

Through practical discussions and thought-provoking hypotheticals, attendees will examine key requirements under Circular 230, AICPA professional standards, attorney-client and tax practitioner privilege rules, best practices for document management and IRS interactions, and the opportunities and risks associated with AI in tax practice. Participants will gain practical insights to help identify ethical issues, exercise professional judgment, and maintain compliance in an increasingly technology-driven tax environment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the ethical frameworks and professional standards applicable to in-house tax professionals.
  • Evaluate reliance on third-party tax advice and tax positions.
  • Identify ethical considerations during IRS examinations and document production requests.
  • Recognize privilege and confidentiality issues involving attorneys, CPAs, and Kovel arrangements.
  • Assess the benefits, risks, and governance considerations of artificial intelligence in tax practice.
