The State Income Tax Planning Manager role provides comprehensive state income tax planning, the objective of which is to identify and adopt optimal filing strategies that result in the lowest legal state income tax liability without adversely impacting operations. These strategies may relate to (1) the recognition and timing of income, deductions, and credits; (2) apportionment methods; (3) separate versus combined, consolidated, or unitary filings; and (4) other opportunities.

JOB REQUIREMENTS (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills)

  • CPA Certification Required
  • Masters of Taxation Strongly Preferred
  • 10+ years multistate income tax expertise
  • Experience coordinating state audits
  • Excellent research skills
  • Analytical and inquiring mind
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Aptitude for effective communication
  • High level of energy/engagement
  • Ability to Influence at multiple levels of the organization
  • Experience managing relationships with auditors from various state’s departments of revenue
  • Ability to evaluate the tax implications of company activities and develops strategies to minimize the tax obligations.
  • Ability to understand the needs, interest, strength and opportunities of others, and use that understanding to grow and develop employees and team


  • Coordinate State Audits
  • Identify state filing gaps
  • Design and implement strategies to address state filing gaps
  • Manage relationships with states’ departments of revenue
  • Advises management on future changes to tax regulations and possible impact to the organization
