TEI is dedicated to improving the tax system in a principled, effective manner. Improving the tax laws and their administration by reducing complexity and compliance burdens and by fostering cooperation and the exchange of ideas with government tax officials are TEI’s key purposes — the principles that govern its action and by which it is judged. TEI’s 7,000 members play a critical role in identifying issues to be addressed and collectively supporting those principles.
TEI has an enviable history of advocating on a range of tax matters to the U.S. Treasury Department, Internal Revenue Service, the tax-writing committees of Congress, and in Canada to the Department of Finance and the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency. Submissions are also filed with the states and provinces. TEI’s expansion into Europe and Asia has opened up opportunities there.
TEI testifies on legislation and regulations; holds regular liaison meetings with tax authorities at the state, provincial, and federal levels of government; and periodically files briefs amicus curiae in court cases of widespread interest to business taxpayers.
The effectiveness of TEI’s advocacy efforts is directly related to the active involvement of its members. Although TEI’s staff collectively has more than 100 years of experience on tax policy and administration issues, the Institute depends on the unique insights of the in-house tax professional. There is no substitute for real-world experience: It imbues TEI’s comments with credibility and helps governments craft more administrable rules.
Whether commenting on legislation in their nation’s capital or interacting with tax officials in their own province or state, TEI members are involved at all levels of government in identifying tax issues — and working to effect meaningful change. By joining TEI’s advocacy efforts, you can lend your voice to the Institute’s efforts, enhance them, and advance both your company’s and the business community’s interests.
